'It didn't happen': Darwin Nunez admits he was disappointed with what Liverpool did at the end of the season

Darwin Nunez has cut a frustrated figure at Liverpool over recent times.

Having had a good season up until that point, the Uruguayan’s form really tailed off in the final few months of the campaign.

Dropped for Cody Gakpo, Nunez had to get used to a place on the Liverpool bench. Jurgen Klopp simply looked to have lost trust in his No.9.

After some of the misses Nunez had been producing, that was hardly surprising. Had the 24-year-old buried even half of the big chances he squandered, Liverpool would surely have added even more to their impressive trophy history.

Clearly dissatisfied, Nunez wiped his social media pages of everything Liverpool-related. And now, back in Uruguay with the national team, Darwin has opened up on the end of the season at Anfield.

What Darwin Nunez has said about Liverpool

Most Liverpool supporters are still really willing Nunez to be a success at their club.

Although he does struggle in front of goal, the former Benfica striker is a likeable character who tends to give everything out on the pitch.

Thankfully, suggestions that Nunez could be sold this summer have already been quashed. There have even been claims that new head coach Arne Slot has pinpointed him as being a crucial part of his new-look squad.

While that’s all well and good, Nunez clearly harbours regrets over the way things ended under Klopp.

And speaking to Uruguayan outlet El Pais, the 2022 signing admitted that he was disappointed Liverpool couldn’t send the German off with a bigger bang.

“We were all a bit shocked by Klopp’s departure, nobody expected it,” Nunez explained. “It’s a shame he’s leaving. Personally, I would like him to go big, winning things, and it didn’t happen that way. For the players It’s also a shame. I wish him the best in the world.”

Darwin Nunez in last chance saloon at Liverpool

While it is good news that Liverpool are looking to keep hold of Nunez, you can’t help but feel he’s in his final chance.

After two years, it would be unfair to say there haven’t been improvements. Darwin was very good for large parts of last season and looked like he was getting better all the time.

Nevertheless, things really regressed from March onwards. Nunez didn’t score in his final 10 games of the season. For a player who cost so much money, Liverpool haven’t been seeing enough.

In a way, Nunez is perhaps fortunate that there is a change of manager coming. There have been reports that Klopp would have leant towards selling the striker had he been staying put.

With Slot on his way, the slate is about to be wiped clean for Nunez. But if he continues to misfire under the Dutch coach, you can’t see how he continues into a fourth season at Anfield. Big year coming up for the big man.
