'No chance': 'World-class' manager was never going to get the Chelsea job - journalist

Chelsea were never open to the idea of bringing in one top manager this summer it seems.

Right now, Roberto De Zerbi and Enzo Maresca are the main candidates to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea.

The Blues are without a manager after the Argentine left the club by mutual consent last week.

A couple of names, however, will definitely not be succeeding him at Stamford Bridge.

The above includes Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna. While McKenna is someone who Chelsea have looked at, it has been claimed that the club are no longer considering him.

The manager who had ‘no chance’ of getting Chelsea job

At present, there are some high-profile managers currently out of work.

That includes Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho and Thomas Tuchel, who have all managed at Chelsea in the past.

Journalist Rahman Osman recently asked one Chelsea source if there was a chance that Mourinho would be considered for the job.

In response, they said this was “a new Chelsea” and that “he’s got no chance.”

Should Chelsea have considered Jose Mourinho?

Considering that the club have given serious consideration to someone like McKenna, who has spent all of his managerial career in the EFL so far, then yes.

But it is clear that Chelsea want to move in a different direction. They want a young and progressive coach who is going to play expansive football.

If that had not been the case, then the club probably would be looking at the likes of Mourinho and Conte.

Mourinho has won everything in the game and is a top coach, with Jurgen Klopp hailing him as a “world-class” manager a few years ago.

However, having not been considered for the Chelsea job, his time at the top now looks to be over, if it was not already.

Rather than someone like the 61-year-old, you would expect Chelsea to appoint De Zerbi, Maresca or another more modern-day coach.
