Why Southampton’s Premier League promotion could actually be bad news for Tottenham this summer - opinion

Having finally concluded their season in Australia, a fair few Tottenham Hotspur fans will have tuned in to see Southampton face Leeds United at Wembley.

And whilst many had expected Leeds to win the Championship play-off final, Southampton and Kyle Walker-Peters were victorious.

The former Tottenham man has enjoyed a remarkable season with the Saints and deserves his return to the Premier League.

And whilst Sunday’s final would have probably appeared pretty inconsequential to Spurs fans watching on, the result could have a two-fold impact on their summer transfer plans.

Firstly, Kyle Walker-Peters has actually been mentioned as a possible candidate to return to north London this summer.

The versatile full-back looks perfect for Ange Postecoglou’s system, a player who could replace both Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro on either side of defence when needed.

But having stuck by Southampton in the Championship, he seems unlikely to abandon their project in the top flight.

And as well as possibly impacting their incoming business, Tottenham may now have a fresh problem when it comes to raising funds to support their summer of spending.

Tottenham may now struggle to sell Joe Rodon to Leeds after missing out on promotion

Spurs centre-back Joe Rodon has enjoyed a strong season at Elland Road and has been envisioned to make the switch permanently this summer.

It was reported in recent months that with just 12 months remaining on his Tottenham contract this summer, Rodon would make the switch to Leeds regardless of the level they are playing in the 2024/25 season.

But with a Championship stay now confirmed, some at the club may be concerned that Leeds’ plans could change.

As mentioned, Rodon has been formidable for Daniel Farke’s side, whether playing alongside Ethan Ampadu or Pascal Struijk, but finances will now surely be tight.

And in a summer in which Tottenham are thought to be considering a big spend, they won’t want any complications when it comes to clearing out players on the periphery of things.

That list also contains the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Djed Spence, Sergio Reguilon – there’s evidently a lot of work to do.

And in order for Postecoglou to progress, Spurs will surely have to address the burden of those players on their wage bill.

All that being said, Tottenham have just been told how much it will cost to buy a midfielder Fabio Paratici absolutely loves.
