Former Arsenal ace sold by Arteta for £5.5m drops masterclass display in historic title win

Several Arsenal players who left in recent years have won trophies at their new clubs, and midfielder Lucas Torreira has now followed his former partner Granit Xhaka in winning a league title.

Xhaka and Torreira formed what was at times a strong midfield partnership under Unai Emery and later Mikel Arteta, but as of last year, both departed North London.

Bayer Leverkusen just completed a historic unbeaten league and cup double with Xhaka at the heart of it, as he scored the winner in the DFB-Pokal final, and Torreira is also thriving in Turkey with Galatasaray.

The Uruguayan left Arsenal permanently last year after a few loan spells away, with his initial dream move to the Emirates becoming a nightmare, but he now has a lot of silverware under his belt, and is thriving at the top end of Turkish football.

Lucas Torreira drops masterclass to help Galatasaray secure Turkish Super Lig title

Heading into the final day of the Turkish Super Lig season, Galatasaray knew that they could not lose away against Konyaspor, otherwise heated rivals Fenerbahce would have taken their spot at the top with a win.

In a high-pressure game, it was the former Arsenal midfielder who stepped up to help his team. Former Inter Milan star Mauro Icardi opened the scoring early on, and Torreira then helped the Argentinian double his side’s lead with a superb assist.

Torreira spotted space in behind and made an underlapping run to catch the defence off-guard, before powering a cross into the box, which Icardi then converted superbly with a flick.

The 28-year-old was a dominant force in the middle of the park, completing 93% of his passes, creating two chances, completing seven of his eight attempted long balls and made nine recoveries as per FotMob.

It was the type of performance which made him a fan favourite in his early months at Arsenal, but his confidence fell apart quickly.

When Torreira first arrived, he was an instant hit as his tenacious tackling in the middle of the park proved popular among the Arsenal fans.

His crowning moment came when he scored his first goal for the club, in an iconic 4-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in a North London derby.

However, in his second season, Emery’s side were really struggling, and the Spaniard had deployed Torreira out of position as an attacking midfielder.

This killed Torreira’s confidence, and although he initially performed well when Arteta came in and moved him back to a deeper midfield role, a long-term injury ended his chances of success at the Emirates.

He moved to Atletico Madrid on loan when Arsenal signed Thomas Partey, but despite winning a La Liga title, he hardly featured, and was again on the lookout for a new club.

Torreira then impressed on loan at Fiorentina, before joining Galatasaray on an initial loan, which was made permanent for £5.5m last summer, and he has now won three league titles since he last appeared in an Arsenal shirt.
