‘Incredible’ Liverpool player should be furious with what the Premier League announced on Sunday

Liverpool haven’t had too much luck in terms of individual awards in the Premier League this season.

Having come up short against both Man City and Arsenal, Jurgen Klopp’s players were overlooked in the majority.

Virgil van Dijk did deservedly get a nod for player of the season, but was unlikely to ever win. And with Mohamed Salah failing to get going in the Golden Boot race, no one else stepped up to challenge either.

It ultimately won’t matter too much to the Liverpool squad, but it’s always nice to have players up for gongs.

However, after a surprise announcement on Sunday, one Reds star can be very disappointed indeed with the Premier League.

Alisson Becker loses out on Premier League’s best save

We don’t think there’s much debate that Van Dijk was Liverpool’s best player this season.

Alexis Mac Allister was perhaps his closest challenger, but the Reds captain was the runaway leader in our opinion.

Had a couple of others managed to stay for the whole season though, they would have no doubt been close.

Having had his best individual season at the club in 2022/23, Alisson Becker was stunning once again in the early parts of the campaign.

The ‘keeper’s best moment came during August’s brilliant come-from-behind win away to Newcastle United. Alisson later named his save from Miguel Almiron that day as being his best ever.

However, the Premier League unfortunately weren’t all that impressed. Although Alisson’s save was nominated for the save of the season award, it didn’t win.

That honour went to a run-of-the-mill double save from Luton’s Thomas Kaminiski against Crystal Palace. Ali was robbed.

Why Alisson deserved to win

It isn’t just that Alisson’s save was so much better than Kaminiski’s, it’s that it was truly special in its own right.

The 31-year-old had absolutely no right to get to Almiron’s well struck effort. The Paraguayan caught the ball as sweetly as he could have wished to.

As it arrowed into the top right-hand corner, it looked all the world like he’d just put Newcastle 2-0 up against 10-man Liverpool. It would have buried the game.

But Alisson came from nowhere, flinging to his left to claw the ball away. Not only did he save it, but the Liverpool No.1 also made sure no-one could get to the rebound, pawing it out for a corner. It was a demonstration of Ali’s ‘incredible’ abilities.

In a match that Darwin Nunez eventually inspired a late Liverpool comeback, Alisson didn’t even really get the headlines on the day itself. But he should have been rewarded for one of the finest saves you’ll ever see.
