‘Exceptional’ £39m Tottenham player left out of national team’s Euros squad despite March call-up

One of Ange Postecoglou’s best performers has now been left out of his national team’s training squad ahead of this summer’s Euros.

Of course, whilst the competition is taking place in Germany, Spurs’ staff will likely be working diligently behind the scenes to improve their playing squad.

Perhaps Southampton’s victory over Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday could actually turn out to be bad news for Tottenham.

Not only may they struggle to bring former player Kyle Walker-Peters back to the club now, which has been rumoured, but there could also be fresh concern over Joe Rodon joining Leeds permanently.

Either way, Tottenham will be well prepared, and Daniel Levy must be determined to prove that the club do have just as much ambition as their manager.

Ange Postecoglou proved his credentials this season, improving the likes of Pedro Porro dramatically.

But with Spain just announcing their training squad for the Euros, that progression wasn’t enough to earn Porro a place.

Having been called up in March, and having continued to impress for his club since, Porro wasn’t included in Spain’s extended training squad.

Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal and Sevilla’s 38-year-old Jesus Navas were included ahead of the Spurs man, who can be deemed unfortunate.

Perhaps Luis de la Fuente doesn’t intend to use his full-backs in a similar attacking brief to Tottenham, meaning Porro’s skill set wouldn’t be best utilised.

Although Porro is an ‘exceptional’ talent when playing forwards, he’s still often found wanting with his defending.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a defender with better ball striking than the £39m-signing, but like the rest of Spurs’ defence at times this season, he’s often caught out.

And on the subject of Porro, Tottenham would definitely benefit from better back up for both of their full-backs next season.

The impact of Destiny Udogie’s injury towards the end of the season can’t be understated – the club need specialist cover.

There’s a lot to do for Spurs, and despite the progress Postecoglou has already made at the club, his rebuild is still very early.

That being said, Tottenham have just been told how much it will cost to sign a midfielder that Fabio Paratici absolutely loves.
