Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for 2023, has commented on the potential for a merger between the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During an interview on NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV, posted on YouTube on Saturday, May 25, Obi also discussed the possibility of receiving support as a southeast candidate in the 2027 presidential election from Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 candidate.
When asked by the interviewer, Obi expressed his appreciation for Abubakar’s remarks about potentially backing him due to his status as a Southeast candidate.
“I commend him, and I’m grateful for his statements, especially where he said he will support me if it (the presidential ticket) goes to the South East,” Obi said, according to Punch.
Obi underscored that his main focus is not his own ambitions or political strategies, but rather the welfare of Nigeria and its citizens.
He emphasised that his priority isn’t becoming president but ensuring Nigeria thrives, especially for its less privileged population, given the abundant potential of its people.
Regarding the possible fusion of the PDP and LP, Obi voiced willingness as long as the aim is to improve governance in Nigeria and unleash its considerable potential.
“If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it,” he said.
