Israel said a shooting incident took place on its border with Egypt on May 27 and that it was in contact with Cairo to resolve the matter, local Channel 12 reported.
In a brief statement, Israel's military confirmed there had been a 'shooting incident on the Egyptian border' earlier in the day without providing further details.
'The incident is being looked into and a dialogue is taking place with the Egyptian side,' it said.
Israeli media reports said two Egyptian soldiers were killed and others wounded in an exchange of fire with Israeli troops at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt's Sinai desert and the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
There were no reports of Israeli casualties.
The shooting incident occurred less than a day after Israel struck a refugee camp, killing more than 35 people, including children, in a late-night attack in Rafah’s Tal as-Sultan neighbourhood.
In response, Israel’s military prosecutor called the events “difficult,” adding that Israel was investigating the incident.
Israel has faced a widespread international backlash for the Israeli airstrike. French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “outraged by the Israeli strikes that have killed many displaced persons in Rafah”. While the Norwegian Refugee Council's Director Jan Engeland condemned the Israeli government over rolling over red lines.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said on X that the Israeli attack demanded “strong condemnation and a practical response” from the international community.
“This barbaric crime is a clear example of a war crime and an obvious violation of the interim orders issued by the International Court of Justice,” the ministry account quoted Nasser Kanaani as saying.
“Whenever the child-killing Zionist regime suffers humiliating defeats in the field, it commits such insane war crimes against Palestinian civilians,” he added.
Israel and Egypt share strong security ties and coordinate closely in the demilitarized Sinai region under a 1979 peace treaty between the two countries.
