Multiple EU countries push to classify IRGC as terrorist organization

Multiple EU countries, including Germany, are pushing for the European Union to classify the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization on the basis of a German court ruling, diplomats told dpa on Monday.

Germany, among others, have asked EU legal officials to examine a Dusseldorf court ruling that found an Iranian state agency was responsible for an attempted arson attack on a synagogue.

EU diplomats told dpa that the EU legal service confirmed that the judgement could be sufficient. The Dusseldorf ruling fulfils an difficult and important step.

Designating the branch of the Iranian armed forces as a terrorist organization under EU law has been challenging to date as the IRGC would first have to be prosecuted by a national authority for terrorist activities.
