Theo Walcott picks his all-time five-a-side Arsenal team, there's an obvious problem

Former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott spent over 11 years at the Emirates, and this spanned several different squads in seperate eras.

Arsenal were undergoing significant changes under Arsene Wenger when Walcott arrived as a prodigal teenager, with the move to the Emirates Stadium from Highbury causing financial restrictions.

A lot of key players departed the club, and Wenger had to find solutions to replace such quality, which he did to great effect, keeping Arsenal competitive in the top four.

This meant that Walcott played alongside a lot of top quality players during his time at Arsenal, and he has now selected the best who would feature in a hypothetical five-a-side team with him.

Theo Walcott names ideal Arsenal five-a-side team including Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Santi Cazorla

Speaking in a promotional video for SoccerAid, Walcott claimed that his ideal five-a-side team would see him line up alongside Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, striker Robin van Persie, and midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Santi Cazorla.

“I’d pick myself, up and down the field, use my pace, goals and I’d be bit of a defender,” he stated of himself.

“Santi Cazorla, both footed, I remember he used to take corners with both feet, technically he was one of the most gifted players who’s ever lived.

“Cesc Fabregas as well, both of them being Spanish means they can really connect in the middle of the park. His name says it all, his passing abilities, his goalscoring abilities were fantastic.

“Thierry Henry. He was my idol growing up, playing with him was an absolute dream and his goals say it all.

“Last but not least, I’d go for Robin van Persie. His left foot was like a wand. No, I don’t need goalkeepers for this,” he added.

The obvious problem with Walcott’s selections, is that he had no goalkeeper or defender selected, despite claiming that he could perform in a deeper role in the hypothetical scenario.

Given how many top players Walcott featured alongside, it was inevitable that some would be left off his list.

The Englishman won three FA Cups during his time at the club, with Aaron Ramsey scoring the winner in two of the finals, and Olivier Giroud also playing a massive part.

Walcott did also feature alongside Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, who were the best centre-back partnership of the Emirates era until Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba came along in the last two seasons.

For Walcott’s five-a-side team, technique would be important, and it was surprising to see Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez omitted. However, the team he has picked, in an attacking sense, could have enough quality between them to win a game without a defender behind them.
