Jack Butland's 'blunder' after all the hype sums up sweet last laugh for Celtic

Adam Idah’s goal against Rangers which won the Scottish Cup for Celtic is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Raised as a Celtic fan, Idah got the chance to join his boyhood heroes this January and it’s fair to say he has taken this opportunity with great gusto.

It was an inspired piece of transfer business by Brendan Rodgers and one that the Celtic boss is really only getting the credit he deserves for now.

Rodgers also deserves a lot of credit for winning the league and Scottish Cup and dominating Rangers after making players like Daizen Maeda, James Forrest and Joe Hart perform out of their skins this season, especially the retiring Hart.

VotedThe Celtic Supporters’ Association’s Player of the Year, Hart has been immense and it makes you wonder why the media have been so quick to fall over themselves about Philippe Clement and his players, especially when they failed to produce in the big games when it mattered.

Rangers ‘blunder’ gives Celtic fans the last laugh

For all the hype the Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland has had thrown at him, especially the bizarre circus surrounding him and the England squad, it’s little wonder the Celtic fans are left scratching their heads when Joe Hart’s performances this season have been just as good, if not better.

And it was summed up at Hampden after Butland’s part in Celtic’s winner was labelled as a ‘blunder’ by former Rangers striker, Billy Dodds, and a big mistake by former Hoops hero, Pat Bonner on the Scottish Football Podcast.

Bonner: “It must have taken a deflection because Jack Butland because it was almost straight down the middle of the goal and he could have dealt with it but he was away to one side and lost his balance.

“Oh I’m not sure it’s taken a deflection. He’s gone too early. He’s just gone too early.”

Dodds: “He cuts across the ball, Bernardo, doesn’t he? And I think Butland’s thinking he’s going to hit it into that corner.
“It might have taken a slight nick but not enough to make that blunder by Butland.”

Look, I’m not denying Butland is a good ‘keeper, far from it. But when Celtic have a manager and players who have produced when the pressure was really on, it seems strange that the media sought to create a narrative that somehow Clement had the upper hand over Rodgers and his team.

As I have said previously, this season’s successes must taste even sweeter for Rodgers and I hope he sits back for a bit and enjoys them.

Because after having to endure what the press has been throwing about our team, I know I am going to.
