Rangers confusion as leading Italian journalist provides ‘doubts’ update in reported £3.2m pursuit

Jose Cordoba is a name which is growing increasingly familiar with Rangers fans.

The Panamanian centre-back, 22, might not have been on the radar of many supporters a few months ago but you can bet several of them have now watched a YouTube highlight reel.

With Rangers said to have held off substantial interest to lead the race for Jose Cordoba all the sounds around this deal are increasingly positive.

Not least those from Bulgarian which claim the centre-back is set to jet in for a medical this week ahead of a £2m rising to £3.2m switch.

But Rangers fans have been left in a state of confusion by the tweets of one leading Spanish/Italian sports journalist who has all but confirmed Cordoba is moving to Ibrox.

Cordoba ‘about to sign for Rangers’

Mateo Moretto is a widely respected European sports journalist connected to Spanish publication Revelo.

This afternoon the journalist – who is followed by Rangers director of recruitment Nils Koppen on X – tweeted to confirm that Rangers were closing in on a move for Jose Cordoba.

But when translated into English, the tweet appears to both confirm the transfer and then suggest that Rangers are hanging fire over a deal due to Jose Cordoba’s ‘doubts’ about playing for the club.

Translated into English, the message reads:

“Jose Cordoba is about to sign for Glasgow Rangers,” said Moretto.

“The Scottish club has taken 24/48 hours to decide whether to close the operation with Levski Sofia due to the player’s doubts about playing for such a historically important club.”

Rangers transfer hunt continues

Whilst we’re certain that the details of the second half of the Tweet from Moretto have got somewhat lost in translation, the situation has played with the nerves of some supporters.

Rangers aren’t waiting around to kickstart Philippe Clement’s summer rebuild with Brazilian left back Jefte already in the door.

Panamanian defender Jose Cordoba looks increasingly likely to join him and it’s safe to say the fact Mateo Moretto is now reporting on the deal can only be a good thing.

With the defender set for a busy summer schedule of World Cup Qualifiers and the Copa America with Panama, sorting a deal out ASAP is clearly the best for all parties.

Should a deal go through, Rangers look to have held off substantial competition to secure the signing of Cordoba this summer.

But as soon as we see the scarf hoisted above the defender’s head, attentions will quickly turn to who is next.
