Netflix star admits he quit acting over a 'feeling' and it's not what you expected

Dylan Minnette is best known for his acting role on 13 Reasons Why, though the 27-year-old says music is his top priority now.

Dylan Minnette spent his teens and early 20s carving out an impressive acting CV, but having spent two years away from TV the Scandal star has admitted his band is now his top priority. Reflecting on his career alongside fellow Wallows members Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston, Minnette shed light on why he made the switch from acting to music.

Dylan Minnette says Wallows is more important to him than acting now

In a recent appearance on the Zach Sang Show, Minnette opened up about why he decided to alter his plans for the future, and the reason he grew tired of acting.

“I was very fortunate to find success in it… but it also started to feel like a bit of a job,” explained Minnette, who has belonged to the successful alt-rock band Wallows since the early 2010s. “I feel like, Wallows, the music, there’s this passion that we’ve always had as a group to really take it all the way, as far as we can.

“And I was like ‘I feel like I’m in a position where I can just do that for a while and get this the furthest it can be’, and the only way that can happen is if I put my 100% time and energy into it and take it very seriously and show the world that we all take this very seriously and this is a real band”.

Reflecting on his good fortune, the celebrity added: “For me, I’m just following what feels natural and inspiring at the time and I’m very obviously incredibly privileged and lucky to be in a position where it’s like ‘This feels like a job, so I’m going to do this now and this will be my job’, it’s insane.

Minnette refuses to rule out eventual return to acting world

When asked by Sang whether a return to acting is still on the cards, Minnette refused to rule anything out.

“I do think about it (acting) as a concept one day but I’m like, gotta do this first. I tell my manager, my agent, ‘Yeah guys, 2026!’. It’s just one of those things.”

Discussing a failed attempt at a return to acting, the rhythm guitarist explained that he had considered getting back into it – but was held back by circumstances beyond his control.

“In my mind I was going to do something last year, in this time frame from like this month to this month, I’ll act in something. And that time frame was the actor’s strike – the SAG strike,” Winnette laughed.

“I feel like I have something to give artistically and creatively in other fields other than just music,” reflected Minnette. “That’s probably acting… at some point when we’ve fulfilled our Wallows duties, and ready to take a break or take a second, I feel like that’s when I’ll have inspiration to do something.”

With no planned breaks for the increasingly popular Walllows, who are set to embark on a busy summer schedule – it looks as though Winnette will not be starring in any Netflix hits any time soon.
