Ukraine Drone Travels Record Distance to Attack Key Russian Early Warning System: Report

A Ukrainian drone reportedly traveled more than 1,100 miles to attack a military radar station deep inside Russia, according to a report Monday.

The Sunday trip set a "new record for the range of destruction for kamikaze drones," an unidentified Ukrainian military intelligence official told the Ukrainska Pravda news website.

It's unclear if the drone inflicted any damage.

Russian media reported that a drone went down in the Orenburg region on Sunday and that no civilian infrastructure was hit, Reuters reported Monday.

The attack reportedly took place in Orsk, a city about 810 miles west of Ukraine's easternmost border, which is now controlled by Russia.

Orsk is about 90 miles farther west than the Russian city of Salavat, which was previously the most distant site reached by a Ukrainian drone, Ukrainska Pravda said.

Sunday's target was a reportedly a Voronezh M early-warning radar station with over-the-horizon technology that can spot ballistic and cruise missiles and also track objects in space.

The attack marked the second against a Russian radar state since last week, when Ukraine sent a drone against a Voronezh DM radar station in the southern Krasnodar region, according to Reuters.

Satellite imagery showed significant damage from the Thursday attack against the Armavir radar station, the U.S.-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty website reported Saturday.

A Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters that the radar stations were being targeted because they're used to "monitor the actions of the Ukrainian security and defense forces in the south of Ukraine."
