The LSU football staff has landed another player from the NCAA Transfer Portal, and it comes at another position of need.
Louisiana Tech punter Blake Ochsendorf announced his decision to transfer to LSU on Monday, giving the Tigers a late addition following the spring portal window. Ochsendorf had entered the portal during the first window, but held out on choosing a college as he explored all options.
When the dust settled, LSU landed Conference USA’s top punter from the 2023 season.
Ochsendorf averaged 45.72 yards per punt this past season, leading CUSA and ranking inside the Top 20 nationally. His 48.09 yards per punt during CUSA games ranked third-best nationally among punters in conference games, and he led CUSA with 17 punts of 50 yards or more – the most by any Louisiana Tech player in more than a decade.
18 of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line, which ranked second in conference play. 25 punts in 2023 were fair-caught by the opponent, which was most among all CUSA punters.
Ochsendorf closed out his time at Louisiana Tech as the all-time leader in career punting average with 45.72 yards per punt (minimum of 50 punts).
The move to add Ochsendorf to the roster comes after LSU head coach Brian Kelly expressed the need for competition at the punter position following the program’s Spring Game in April.
LSU’s lone scholarship punter is Peyton Todd, who enters his fourth year with the program as a former West Monroe High standout. Entering his fourth season with the Tigers, Todd has appeared in two games, both times as a holder on place kicks.
The Tigers are looking to fill the void left by Jay Bramblett, who was the team’s punter during Brian Kelly’s first two seasons at LSU.
Ochsendorf is the third player the Tigers added to the roster this spring, joining defensive tackles Gio Paez and Jay’Viar Suggs.
