Report: Latest update now given on Joe Rodon's future after Leeds United lose play-off final

Joe Rodon’s long-term future at Leeds United now looks uncertain after the play-off final defeat to Southampton on Sunday.

The Whites face a potentially difficult window ahead having become the only one of the three relegated sides not to bounce back at the first attempt, with Leicester City winning the title.

With that in mind, Leeds know that key player sales will be required this summer and due to the need to raise some funds before June 30, it could have a knock-on effect on potential incomings.

Leeds currently owe a total of £190 million in unpaid transfer instalments, but the club’s official accounts make it clear that only £73.6 million needs paying this summer.

Luis Sinisterra and Tyler Adams have already been sold within this financial year, but according to finance expert Kieran Maguire, Leeds will need to ensure ‘old player acquisitions’ are sorted before they can spend.

Rodon now wanted by Premier League clubs after end of Leeds loan

Rodon officially played the last game of his season-long-loan move from Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley with no option-to-buy having been inserted into the deal last summer.

The 26-year-old established himself as a key player over the course of the season, making 50 appearances across all competitions, with Leeds boasting the second best defensive record in the league.

Leeds have been linked with signing him permanently for a number of months now, with Rodon himself also making it clear he would like to stay.

However, Leeds have been dealt a potential blow in their hopes of doing so with the Daily Mail now reporting Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation.

Spurs have reportedly set an asking price of between £10m and £15m, which top-flight clubs are considerably more likely to be able to meet quicker than Leeds.

BBC pundit Jon Newsome mooted on Sunday that play-off winners Southampton could even move for the Welshman, in what would be a real kick in the teeth for Leeds.

Leeds may have to accept defeat in Rodon chase

Leeds simply are not in a position to be splashing eight-figures on one single signing this summer, irrespective of how good Rodon has been.

With the amount of players who could leave this summer, Leeds’ squad could be on for a major overhaul and so any funds they can spend, needs to be spread across multiple positions.

That said, it would be incredible if Leeds can bring Rodon back permanently this summer as he has clearly found a place to enjoy his football again.

A spine built around him, Pascal Struijk and Ethan Ampadu would set Leeds up to go again irrespective of the attacking players they may lose.
