Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is awaiting news over his future as Ineos weigh up whether he should remain in charge.

Manchester United investors Ineos are taking their time to make a decision on Erik ten Hag.

There was no snap-judgement afterthe FA Cup win. Ineos did not want to appear reactionary. There is no indication over which way they will lean.

Erik ten Hag wants to stay on as manager, he made that clear inhis post-game comments at Wembley.

Marco van Basten backs Erik ten Hag

Ajax legend Marco van Basten believes Erik ten Hag is still the right manager for Manchester United and deserves more time.

He was quoted via Voetbal Primeur, praising the way Ten Hag managed to fire up his United players to execute the win over City.

Van Basten explained: “It was not a good match, but it is great that he managed to win against City with such a limited team.

“Despite few opportunities with the players, he was still able to win the FA Cup, which was very important. As a result, they play European football. I think he is still the man to get something done with Manchester United. I think they should give him time.”

“I do think he is capable of taking Manchester to a higher level. And that takes time, especially with a year like this, in which they have had to play so often with a different composition.”

Referring to the ongoing injury issues the Dutchman has had to deal with, Van Basten added: “I think you have to take that into account.”

Van Basten on Ten Hag mistakes

Van Basten has seen Ten Hag win league titles with Ajax, and his efforts with his previous Eredivisie clubs.

He is insistent that sticking with him is the right move, but admits the Dutchman has not been perfect during his time at Old Trafford.

He points towards errors in the transfer market setting him back, commenting: “I know from Ajax that he is a good trainer. He did well at FC Utrecht, and at Go Ahead Eagles. He is someone who can build, who can make a team stronger. But you have to be lucky that you have a good group.

“He has, and a mistake on his part, he bought many players for a lot of money, who did not perform well.

“That is the job of a technical director, he took on too much.”

Ineos are currently bedding in a new structure behind the scenes, with Jason Wilcox taking over as technical director. He will be followed by Dan Ashworth as sporting director.

This should help the manager avoid the big errors in the transfer market we have seen in recent seasons.

Whether Ten Hag will be the one to benefit, remains to be seen, or whether Ineos really want to go ‘all-change’ by adding their own manager in too.
