The UN Security Council was set to convene an emergency meeting Tuesday over an Israeli strike that killed at least 45 people in a displaced persons camp in Rafah. AFP journalists on the ground early Tuesday reported fresh Israeli strikes overnight in the southern Gaza border city.
The attack prompted a wave of international condemnation, with Palestinians and many Arab countries calling it a "massacre". Israel said it was looking into the "tragic accident".
Separately, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday said Spain will recognise a Palestinian state including the Gaza strip and the occupied West Bank, unified under the Palestinian National Authority with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.
He said in a televised address it will not recognise any changes to Palestinian borders after 1967 unless all the parties agree on them. The Spanish government will formally approve the recognition later on Tuesday. Norway and Ireland are slated to formally recognise a Palestinian state on Tuesday, too.
