'Honestly': Connor Roberts sends message to Leeds United fans on Tuesday as he returns to Burnley

Connor Roberts has sent a touching message to Leeds United fans on Instagram after Sunday’s play-off final defeat to Southampton, with the defender now returning to Burnley.

The 28-year-old defender was the club’s only signing in the January window as he reunited with Wales teammates Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon and Dan James at Elland Road ahead of a push for promotion.

But the tough-tackling right-back struggled to start for Leeds, managing just three appearances from the off under Daniel Farke. He clocked up 15 outings in total, scoring a crucial goal against Leicester City.

On Sunday, Roberts came off the bench for a cameo role in the play-off final but could not help Leeds find an equaliser as Southampton secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Roberts was confirmed as returning to Burnley ahead of the clash, where he has a year left on his deal at Turf Moor. He took to Instagram on Tuesday morning, wishing farewell to the Yorkshire club’s supporters.

Connor Roberts sends parting message to Leeds United fans

When Roberts arrived at Leeds, he made it clear that he would be open to a permanent move to Leeds alongside his Welsh mates. Even Daniel Farke suggested a deal could be made permanent this summer.

But instead, Roberts is heading back to Burnley and with The Clarets relegated to The Championship, there is every chance that Roberts is lining up against Leeds next season. Below, is his message to fans.

He said: “Football ey.. Obviously so disappointed not to achieve what we all wanted, but honestly what a massive privilege it was to play just a hand full of games and be involved at this incredible Football Club.

“An invaluable experience and something I’ll remember forever! Thanks for the spectacular support ladies and gents!”
