Report: Southampton now expected to bid for £20m player after promotion, have wanted him for ages

Southampton are now expected to bid for one of the best players in the Championship after winning promotion to the Premier League.

Russell Martin oversaw an immediate return to England’s top-flight for the Saints on Sunday, as a goal from Adam Armstrong secured a 1-0 win over Leeds in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley.

That win secured Southampton a huge financial boost, and now, the Saints plan to spend some of that cash on Jack Clarke

Southampton prepare Jack Clarke move

A story by The Northern Echo now claims that Southampton are set to bid for the Sunderland No.20 after returning to the Premier League.

It is said that Clarke has been a long-term target for the Saints, and Martin’s side are now in a position to finally make a serious push for his signature.

Sunderland are said to be bracing themselves for a bid as those at the Stadium of Light expect an approach from Southampton.

The Northern Echo add that Sunderland have failed to make progress in contract talks with Clarke, who has two years remaining on his current deal – therefore, a sale would be considered by the Black Cats, in fear of losing him for a lot less next summer.

Sunderland are said to value the 23-year-old at £20m.

Clarke shone in the 2023/24 campaign, scoring 15 goals in 40 Championship appearances as Sunderland finished 16th.

Russell Martin faces competition

While promotion to the Premier League has made this deal a realistic possibility for Southampton this summer, there is still expected to be fierce competition for Clarke’s signature.

The Northern Echo mention that Lazio could resurrect interest in the York-born forward, after seeing two bids rejected in January, the second of which was worth £15m.

Maurizio Sarri’s side can offer Clarke European football next season, while it is also said that West Ham are long-term admirers of the Englishman, so the Hammers could get involved too.

The east Londoners wanted to sign the Sunderland star in January.

Therefore, this will not be a straightforward deal for Southampton to pursue, although Martin’s chances of signing Clarke have undoubtedly increased after defeating Leeds at Wembley.
