Report: Sunderland handed boost as Premier League club open talks with Anthony Patterson alternative

Sunderland have been handed a huge boost in their bid to keep hold of Anthony Patterson.

Anthony Patterson has established himself as a key player since forcing his way into Sunderland’s starting line-up before they won promotion to the Championship.

The goalkeeper has been ‘outstanding’ this season and has since attracted interest from the Premier League, with Liverpool reportedly considering him to replace the outgoing Caoimhin Kelleher.

More recently, Patterson has been linked with an £8 million bid from Sheffield United for his services, while The Sun also reported that Wolves were eager to snap him up.

The Midlands outfit were preparing to offload Jose Sa to Saudi Arabia and viewed Patterson as a potential replacement for him.

Wolves could now end their interest in Anthony Patterson

However, it now looks like Sunderland will have one less club to face in their bid to tie down the 24-year-old.

According to Expressen, Wolves are now in talks with Swedish club Djurgardens over a move for goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

The report claims that Wolves sent goalkeeper coach Neil Cutler to watch the shot-stopper in action at the weekend and was very impressed.

With Djurgardens likely to sell if they get a good offer from Wolves, that could bring an end to their interest in Patterson.

Molineux Stadium could have been the perfect move

Wolves could have been a likely destination for Patterson, with first team football surely guaranteed and he would also have the opportunity to push for European football.

Their withdrawal from the race will be huge for Sunderland, as it feels a lot more likely that they can bat off interest from the Blades, who are also playing in the Championship next season.

Liverpool could also be tough, but that will come down to whether Patterson is willing to sit on the bench for one of the biggest clubs in the world, or whether he would prefer to play regularly for his boyhood team.

It does feel like the club would consider offloading him if the fee was right, as he is definitely more replaceable than the likes of Dan Neil and Jack Clarke.

It would be a huge shame to see him leave this summer, but if the Black Cats were able to make seven figures off his exit, then it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
