'We are going to': Jeff Shi hints he will finally grant O’Neil’s transfer wish at Wolves this summer

Gary O’Neil could finally see his Wolves transfer wish granted as Jeff Shi just shared an insight into the club’s plans in the summer window.

After combatting the 2023/24 campaign with a severely limited squad, Gary O’Neil will be hopeful of bolstering his numbers this summer in the transfer window.

The Wolves boss steered his side to a 14th-place finish against the odds, with the financial woes of last summer leaving a void in the squad.

A mass of key players departed to generate profit, seeing O’Neil take charge with little room to manoeuvre injuries and absences throughout the 2023/24 calendar.

Now, the Englishman will be presented with the chance to strengthen key areas this summer, with chairman Jeff Shi shedding some light on one position the Old Gold will bid to improve.

Jeff Shi says Wolves will sign a new striker this summer

After throwing himself into a pool of controversy last week with his words when addressing supporters, Shi has finally shared some positive news regarding Wolves’ plans in the transfer window.

Via Express and Star, the chairman announced that Wolves will be looking to recruit at least one striker this summer, touching upon how much the club are missing Raul Jimenez’s presence.

“We are going to sign one or two number nines this summer.

“The peak Raul was a top-three striker in the league, which is really hard to replace. We did struggle on recruitment in the past few years.

“Hopefully the new strikers or Hee-chan can perform well next season.”

The 2023/24 season represented the first time that a Wolves player has scored more than 10 goals in the Premier League, with Jimenez being the last to do it back in 2019/20, reinforcing how badly the squad needs a reliable striker.

Gary O’Neil’s wish at Wolves could finally come true

In November, it was reported that O’Neil had set his sights on signing a new striker in the January window, a plan that was not able to be sanctioned due to finances.

The boss was left frustrated by not being able to welcome a new forward at the start of the year, with this summer now presenting the perfect opportunity for the Englishman to get his wish.

After ending the 2022/23 campaign as the league’s lowest scorers under Julen Lopetegui, O’Neil solved such woes by playing a more attractive style at Molineux, with a dangerous presence in the box the missing piece to his puzzle.

Shi’s comments are certainly encouraging however, a lot will depend on Fosun’s backing, particularly if a top-quality number nine is to be targeted.
