'Nice to be mentioned': Euro 2024 player admits he's heard rumours that Liverpool want to sign him

Liverpool are formulating their transfer plans for Arne Slot’s first summer in charge.

There isn’t all that much tinkering to be done with the Liverpool squad, with the group in good shape already.

However, one or two areas certainly do need to be addressed. Centre-back is in clear need of an upgrade, although fresh claims that Slot will take a look at Sepp van den Berg suggest a signing may not be necessary.

The same could perhaps also be true of the forward line. Although Liverpool are reportedly looking for a new attacker, much will possibly depend on Slot’s assessment of those already at Anfield.

Finally, there remains a distinct possibility that the Reds will need to do something in the goalkeeping department. Caoimhin Kelleher may leave and would need replacing. And with that in mind, a potential target has now spoken out about rumours linking him with Liverpool.

Justin Bijlow reacts to Liverpool interest

It will be fascinating to see what Liverpool do in terms of a back-up goalkeeper next season. Kelleher leaving shouldn’t be taken as a given.

Nevertheless, the Reds have reportedly already been making enquiries into who could be the Irishman’s successor.

There have been a few names bandied about such as Southampton’s Alex McCarthy. However, the strongest links so far have come for Feyenoord stopper Justin Bijlow.

Currently away with the Netherlands in preparation for Euro 2024, Bijlow has spoken to Dutch outlet Voetbalzone about a possible move to Liverpool.

“Those are two very nice clubs,” said the 26-year-old when asked about interest from Arsenal, as well as the Reds.

“Of course, it’s always nice to be mentioned at big clubs. What I’m just saying: I’m ambitious. As long as I’m playing at Feyenoord, I’ll give it my all and first I just want to focus on the Dutch national team.”

Bijlow a genuine option for Liverpool

Obviously, Liverpool’s need for a new back-up goalkeeper is completely dependent on Kelleher.

If the 25-year-old stays, there’s no need for the Reds to look elsewhere. Kelleher is about the best No.2 in the business.

But having impressed so heartily this season, it feels almost inevitable that the academy graduate will leave. And he’ll do so with the well-wishes of everyone.

With Adrian likely departing too, there are some positions that need filling.

Youngsters like Vitezslav Jaros have done well out on-loan this year and could be considered. It would be a big ask for the 22-year-old to step up and provide cover for Alisson Becker next season, though.

As a result, a move for someone like Bijlow would be ideal. He’s experienced, obviously has quality and is still young enough to improve further. One to keep an eye on.
