‘I used to love’: Wayne Rooney names two former Everton players as his favourite players of all time

Wayne Rooney has been chatting to Gary Neville, reminiscing about his time with Everton, Manchester United and beyond.

The former England striker, who enjoyed a long and supremely successful career all across English football, won the lot.

But, it is worth noting that he grew up in Merseyside supporting the Toffees, and that naturally factored in when questioned about his favourite players of all time.

He would pick two stars who he watched as a youngster and eventually sought to break through into the team and the Premier League where they had starred.

And plenty of Evertonians would likely agree with his decisions.

Wayne Rooney names his favourite players of all time

Speaking on The Overlap, the 38-year-old, who recently agreed to become manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle, was asked 53 quick-fire questions across a 30-minute period.

And whilst most of his answers were rather jovial, recalling times when he would superglue his teammates’ shoes to the floor or when he played a round of golf with Donald Trump, when asked who his favourite players of all time were, he took it seriously.

After all, two of the three he referenced are some of the greatest players English football has ever seen.

He replied rather quickly: ‘Duncan Ferguson. I used to love Shearer and Gazza but Duncan, obviously being an Everton player. Just what he brought to the team, that fight.’

It seems that he would go on to embody that same trait, but partnered it with far more quality than the brutish but brilliant Scotsman.

Rooney also suggested he would like to one day return to coach on Merseyside, just years after Duncan Ferguson nearly became Everton manager, he claimed.

Many Everton fans would agree with Duncan Ferguson and Paul Gascoigne

Really picking from both ends of the spectrum, Paul Gascoigne and Duncan Ferguson encapsulate everything from tortured midfield maestro to explosive and volatile centre forward.

However, both were revered on Merseyside, with the latter the clear favourite.

Goodison Park has always been a stadium that has reacted well to energy and desire, whether that be under Sean Dyche, David Moyes or Howard Kendall.

It is the identity with which the entire club has been forged, thus making Ferguson so well-liked by fans despite hardly boasting the greatest scoring rate in the world.

He bought into Everton, and in turn, they bought into him.

Gascoigne, on the other hand, joined towards the end of his career, and whilst he still had quality, struggles with depression and injury saw his two years on Merseyside cut short.

However, it was likely the true genius that he exhibited beforehand in his career that truly captured Rooney’s imagination, who actually boasts the best traits from both of these former Everton players.
