Bo Nix shares impressions of Sean Payton as a coach

After being drafted by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, former Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix is acting like a sponge around Sean Payton.

The rookie is looking to learn everything he can from the former Super Bowl-winning head coach. As Payton looks to build the Broncos back into a contender, it’s evident he has a ton of faith in Nix being his quarterback, and the first-rounder shared his early impressions of Payton as a coach while speaking with the media.

“He’s been awesome,” Nix said, regarding the Broncos head coach. “He’s teaches me you know, so much already. He’s got a lot of knowledge, and he’s built a pedigree to where when he talks, you listen.

“So that’s what I’m excited to (do), just continue to learn from him more and more each day, and you know, as we go through practices and walk-throughs, you just can’t learn enough from him.”

Evidently, both Nix and Payton are already rubbing off on each other. Payton compared Nix’s style of play to that of a golfer, explaining how cerebral his quarterback is, and how that’s going to help the Broncos in 2024 and beyond.

“It’s almost like watching a good golfer,” Payton said, regarding his new quarterback. “Sometimes, when you watch his game, over two years, you just — there’s a patience to how he plays. The ball comes out, and I don’t want to use the term boring. That’s not the right term. But pretty good decisions, and with each play, the efficiency of how he’s operating. All of that.

“We’ve done these camps for a long time, and some teams no longer have a true rookie minicamp. It might be more of an orientation. I like to have the workout players here because we’ve found a tryout player, every now and then. And then it also allows you to have the full-team drills, and I think it develops, not just the quarterback, but everyone else. So oftentimes, your first exposure to huddle, snap-count, verbiage, that can be challenging. But I thought he threw it well.”

Alas, it’s easy to see why there’s a lot to like for Payton regarding Nix. Over the course of his time in college football, Nix passed for 15,352 yards and 113 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,613 yards and 38 touchdowns, over three seasons with Auburn and two with Oregon.

The duo could be exactly what the Denver Broncos have needed for many seasons. We’ll see if they can start making their name known throughout the league as soon as 2024.
