‘Always difficult’: Arsenal defender says player Man City sold in 2020 was a nightmare to play against

Arsenal defender Cedric Soares has said that one former Manchester City player was so difficult to play against.

The right-back, who is set to leave Arsenal when his contract expires at the end of June, has made 167 Premier League appearances.

Having played for the Gunners, as well as Southampton and Fulham, the defender has come up against a wide variety of top-level attacking players.

Now though, the 32-year-old has shared his thoughts on who the toughest opponents he’s come up against have been, with one former City star getting a special mention.

Speaking in a recent edition of 1 Para 1 shared on Pedro Pinto’s YouTube channel, Soares had this to say when asked who some of the toughest opponents he’s faced in the Premier League are.

He said: “I think [Leory] Sane, I can say. Sane, [Eden] Hazard, but Sane was that player.

“I didn’t like playing against him and he knows, we even talked recently, we were together and talked about it after a game. He said to me, ‘Man, you were always fouling me.’

“That was the duel, because I studied him quite well and I had very good games against him, but I also had bad games where he got the batter of me, especially playing against City was always difficult and him flying down that left wing was not easy.”

Sane is one of the best wingers in Europe

During his four years at the Manchester club, Sane scored 39 goals and delivered 43 assists in 135 appearances across all competitions.

Since joining Bayern Munich back in the 2020 summer transfer window, the winger has found the back of the net 48 times and supplied 50 assists in 175 appearances.

Looking back to the 2017/18 Premier League campaign where Sane scored 10 goals and delivered 15 assists in 32 games, the German also ended the season with more successful take-ons (85) than any other player at City.

This, in addition to the regular goals and assists he’s recorded in his career since joining City, shows just how much of a dangerous and tricky figure he could be to play against.
