'Obviously': Gary Neville asked Wayne Rooney who his best ever teammate was, he answered instantly

Wayne Rooney has disclosed who his best ever teammate was, naming one Manchester United legend in the process.

Wayne Rooney had the privilege of being at Manchester United during some of the greatest years in the club’s history and got to play alongside some of the greats.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought Rooney in as an 18-year-old in 2004 and he’d remain at Old Trafford for practically his entire career as he returned to Everton in 2017 but by then his best years were behind him.

He won one Champions League, one Club World Cup, one Europa League, one FA Cup, four League Cups and five Premier League titles in his time as a Red Devil.

But now long retired and the manager of Plymouth Argyle along with being a pundit for various outlets, Rooney has appeared on The Overlap to be grilled by Gary Neville.

Neville asks Rooney about his best ever teammate

Rooney appeared on the latest episode of The Overlap and faced 53 quickfire questions of which there were many interesting stories, including who his best-ever manager was.

Neville also asked Rooney who the best player he’d ever played with was and Rooney instantly responded, Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Obviously, on ability, Ronaldo. But then Scholsey as well, it’s just what Scholsey brought to the team. But on form and ability, I’d have to say, Cristiano Ronaldo.”

This comes as little surprise, considering he and Ronaldo formed such an impressive attacking force together and he got to see up close and personal just how special the legendary No. 7 was.

Rooney was then asked about the now infamous dilemma of who is best between Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard and his response was shocking.

“They’re all different”, Rooney explained by saying that going for Scholes was his ability to dictate play, he said: “I don’t think anybody could dictate play the way he could.

“All world-class players, but I think Stevie could’ve come to United and been a top, top-class player and almost do what Scholes could do. Whereas I don’t think Scholes could do what Stevie did at Liverpool.”

Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo were a force to be reckoned with for Manchester United

Many will have grown up and fallen in love with football through watching Rooney and Ronaldo run rampant on defences and the pair had an incredible bond on the field.

In 205 appearances together the pair assisted 25 goals for each other with Ronaldo providing 14 and Rooney 11.

The pair played in an era which saw three consecutive league titles, Champions League crowns and more silverware.

When Ronaldo was back at United in 2021, many had their hearts set on seeing the two legend sons eventually playing together for United, although this now won’t happen with Cristiano Jr at Al-Nassr, however, Kai Rooney remains an excellent prospect.
