James Maddison shares his first reaction to Tottenham Hotspur’s Timo Werner deal

Tottenham Hotspur have secured the signing of Timo Werner for next season having negotiated a new deal with RB Leipzig.

Tottenham were always going to prioritise attacking signings after finishing with a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou made his thoughts abundantly clear last week; he stated that adding attackers was his top priority.

Tottenham have wasted no time in striking an attacking deal with Timo Werner’s future now settled.

The German has returned to Tottenham for another season having initially joined on loan from RB Leipzig in January.

Tottenham had an option to sign Werner permanently but have now confirmed a move to bring him back on loan for the full 2024-25 season.

This gives Tottenham a little more time to decide on a permanent deal given that Werner missed the final stages of the campaign through injury.

James Maddison reacts to Timo Werner move

Some Tottenham fans may not be completely sold on Werner.

The former Chelsea man isn’t the most refined player in front of goal and another loan for the 28-year-old doesn’t really seem like building a team for the future.

Still, Werner posed a threat when attacking down Tottenham’s left flank and his ability to get to the byline and cause defenders problems with his pace was clear to see.

Postecoglou may feel that Werner will become even better after a full pre-season at Tottenham and that he can finally find the consistent end product to become a Premier League star.

One man who certainly seems pleased with the move is James Maddison, who spoke to Sky Sports as the news broke on Tuesday evening.

Maddison was hosting a charity golf tournament on Tuesday, raising money for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice in Barnet.

Maddison admitted that Werner actually messaged him to say that he wanted to take part but couldn’t due to the clash with his wedding.

The Spurs playmaker added that Werner’s return ‘sounds good’, believing that the deal is ‘good news’ for Tottenham.

“Yeah, that sounds good to me!” said Maddison. “Timo actually texted me this morning because he’s bang into his golf, he just couldn’t play because he was getting married. He texted me and was supporting the day as well, so that’s good news,” he added.

Maddison and Werner key for Tottenham

Tottenham have a fairly young squad.

There aren’t too many players aged 27 or over in the Tottenham squad and some could even leave this summer.

Fraser Forster, Ben Davies, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Richarlison have all been linked with moves away this summer.

Tottenham are building an exciting side but having players with considerable experience – especially in the Premier League – could be crucial.

Maddison and Werner offer that; Maddison has played nearly 200 Premier League games whilst Werner has played 69 times in England’s top flight.

Both players have plenty of know-how and Postecoglou may have felt that this fairly young Spurs squad needed the influence of a player like Werner, even if only for another year.

Werner now has a chance to show that he deserves to be at Tottenham for the long term, with Tuesday’s deal presenting him with another opportunity to impress in a Spurs shirt.
