‘Don’t think’: Journalist shares which team Eddie Jordan warned Carlos Sainz’s camp to avoid in 2025

Eddie Jordan is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in the Formula 1 paddock.

His Jordan team outperformed their budget and standings in the sport for decades and his advice should be taken very seriously, just as Adrian Newey.

Journalist Tom Clarkson has shared that he bumped into Eddie Jordan in the paddock at the Monaco Grand Prix and has relayed on the F1 Nation Podcast what he said about the future of Carlos Sainz.

The 29-year-old Spaniard is still searching for a seat on the grid for 2025 after being dropped by Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton is his replacement and he’ll be counting down the races until he’s working in Maranello given the difference in performance between Mercedes and Ferrari this year.

Sainz’s options on the grid are beginning to dwindle but Jordan has reportedly told his camp to avoid a move to Sauber.

On paper, that advice makes a lot of sense considering the Swiss outfit are the only team on the grid without a point in 2024.

However, there are other factors to consider including the imminent introduction of Audi to the grid.

Eddie Jordan has told Carlos Sainz’s camp to avoid Sauber move

Carlos Sainz had another successful weekend for Ferrari, although he needed a little bit of luck to join his teammate Charles Leclerc on the podium.

He picked up a puncture on the first lap after the slightest bit of contact with Oscar Piastri going into the first corner and ran wide heading into the Casino section of the circuit.

However, the red flag came out, allowing him to change his tyres and return to his 3 place position on the grid.

Unfortunately for Sainz, his most likely options for 2025 were way down the standings in Monte Carlo compared to his Ferrari.

He’s been closely linked with Williams and although Alex Albon finished 9, it was the team’s first points of the season, highlighting their tough start to the campaign.

Sauber had another terrible race, qualifying way off the pace and failing to challenge for a top-ten finish and it is understandable why Jordan has told his camp to consider their options elsewhere.

Nico Hulkenberg has already committed to the project and alongside Sainz they would be a very strong partnership.

However, Williams have now tied down Alex Albon to another contract and that signal of intent may appeal to the Spaniard.

Eddie Jordan gives his take on Carlos Sainz’s future

Speaking after the race, Clarkson said: “I did bump into Eddie Jordan yesterday, who I might add it was lovely to see EJ.

“Anyway, I said to him, EJ, you seem to be managing everyone in Formula 1 now because of course Adrian Newey publicly thanked him for his input in what Adrian should be doing next with his life.

“But also, I had just seen EJ talking to Carlos Sainz Sr so I said to him, ‘What advice did you give him?’

“And he said, ‘I don’t think Sauber’s the answer’, which I think is interesting.

“I mean, EJ, he knows Formula 1, and I think he’s probably putting two and two together and coming to the same conclusion that you’ve [Diego Mejia] come to about the Mercedes power units.

“I think Mercedes are very, very good, all the guys and girls at Brixworth got it right last time and the messaging we’re getting out of Brixworth again is that they’re making good progress.”

What should Carlos Sainz do in 2025?

It makes sense that Eddie Jordan has warned Sainz’s camp against a move to Sauber given their current position.

An upturn is expected when Audi take over in 2026, but it still represents a huge gamble considering just how far off the pace they currently are.

They’re also trying to close the gap to the rest of the grid in the same year a new set of regulations is being introduced to the sport.

Williams have made a much more compelling case to Sainz and his camp have been impressed in negotiations.

It’s just a shame that Sainz has now been told he won’t be joining Red Bull who have looked like his most promising option ever since he discovered Ferrari wouldn’t be retaining him in 2025.
