European giants refuse to deny plans to sign Mason Greenwood

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has refused to play down reports they could sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United this summer.

The 22-year-old spent the 2023/24 season on loan at La Liga side Getafe after United reneged on a decision to reintegrate him into the first-team fold at Old Trafford.

Greenwood was suspended by United in January 2022 after being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. At the time, Greater Manchester Police confirmed the existence of "social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence" and Greenwood was later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

However, these charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service due to "a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction."

United's previous regime decided to loan out Greenwood this season, and though Sir Jim Ratcliffe has suggested the situation could be reviewed again in the summer, it still looks increasingly likely that the forward's future lies away from Old Trafford.

In recent days, Greenwood has been linked with a move to Champions League finalists Dortmund, and speaking ahead of Saturday's clash with Real Madrid at Wembley, sporting director Kehl did not deny that the club were looking at such a deal.

"I don't want to talk about any rumours now at the moment because it makes no sense. Let's play that final on Saturday," Kehl said.

"Of course we do have our plans for the next season and of course we discuss many scenarios, but nothing for today. Let's focus, let's anticipate that match on Saturday and then we'll see how we move on."

When asked directly about Greenwood, Kehl replied: "I don't want to talk about that now."

Getafe have intimated they would happily re-sign Greenwood for the 2024/25 season, while Atletico Madrid and Juventus are among the other teams in mainland Europe who have been touted with an interest.
