Madhya Pradesh CM visits family of Dalit woman in Sagar, says will conduct "impartial probe" into death

Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) [India], May 29 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday met with the family of the woman who died in mysterious circumstances in Sagar district on May 26, allegedly after "falling off" from the hearse carrying the body of her uncle, who was beaten to death on May 25.

Yadav, who met with the family members of the woman who died said that the government stood with the family in their hour of grief.

The Chief Minister also ensured that a police outpost would be established in the area and an impartial investigation into the matter was underway.

"The state government is with the victim's family. Incidents are happening here again and again, so we will establish a police outpost here and ensure police management, so that such an incident does not happen again," Yadav told reporters.

He further said, "I am with the bereaved family in this hour of grief. We are conducting an impartial investigation in this matter. I would like to tell Congress not to do politics when such a sad incident happens."

"The government is sensitive and is standing with the victim's family. The incidents are happening due to rivalry among themselves and the state government will try to ensure that such an incident does not happen again," the chief minister said.

The deceased girl Anjana Ahirwar had lodged a police case in August 2023 claiming that her brother, a Dalit, was beaten to death by some people pressuring her for a compromise in a molestation case.

She had filed a molestation complaint in January 2019, following which a series of incidents resulted in the deaths of three members of her family in Barodiya Nainagir village in the district.

It is alleged that Anjana and her uncle were eyewitnesses to her brother being beaten to death on August 24, last year.

After the death of her brother, Anjana then said that she had filed a case against some people in connection with molestating her in the past. She claimed that some people had come to her house and had pressurised her to make a settlement in that case.

They also fought with her brother at a bus stand near their house and when their mother who rushed to the spot and attempted to pacify was thrashed by the men, Anjana had alleged in her complaint then.

Meanwhile, in connection with the two recent deaths, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Lokesh Sinha said, "An incident of assault occurred under Khurai police station limits on May 25 in which a man died. A case was registered under IPC section 302 and an investigation is underway. After the post-mortem, the man's family was carrying the body in a hearse on Sunday and during this a woman (the victim) died after falling from the hearse."

"The police are investigating the whole matter and further action would be taken accordingly," he said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a post on X, in Hindi said, "Narendra Modi has ended the 'rule of law'. Just thinking about what the BJP leaders have done to this Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh fills my heart with pain and anger. It is a matter of shame that under the BJP rule, the government is always found standing with the culprits instead of the victimized women,"

Congress had earlier alleged that local BJP leaders sexually assaulted Anjana Ahirwar and kept threatening her not to tell anyone.

"First the BJP leaders sexually assaulted a Dalit girl and then kept threatening her not to tell this to anyone. The frightened girl told this to her family, and then, after a lot of efforts, an FIR was lodged. After this, BJP leaders started pressuring the Dalit family for a compromise. When the family did not agree to the compromise, the girl's brother was beaten to death. When the girl's mother came to intervene, she was stripped naked. After the murder of the Dalit girl's brother, BJP leaders were putting a lot of pressure on the family for a compromise," Congress posted on it official X handle.

"Regarding this, the girl's uncle was called for a compromise three days ago, and he was murdered there. Now the news is that the Dalit girl was bringing her uncle's dead body to the village in an ambulance and on the way, she fell from the ambulance and died," it said. (ANI)
