‘Honestly’: Fabrizio Romano responds when asked if Arsenal could now sign Frenkie De Jong

The transfer window is almost officially underway, and that means that silly season is upon us.

Indeed, rumours will be rife over the next few months as reports and whispers do the rounds amongst fanbases.

Arsenal supporters head into this summer with high expectations. The Gunners need a new midfielder and a new striker, while left-back cover may also be needed.

Speaking on The Debrief, Fabrizio Romano has been asked about the idea of Frenkie De Jong joining Arsenal this summer after some recent chatter about the Dutchman’s future.

Romano says that he’s not heard anything about De Jong and Arsenal yet, claiming that the midfielder is unlikely to leave Barcelona unless he actively pushes for a move.

Fabrizio Romano shares Frenkie De Jong update

Romano shared what he’s heard about De Jong after being asked about a potential move to Arsenal.

“More rumours about Frenkie De Jong, we seem to hear this every window, could a move to Arsenal be possible?” Romano was asked.

“I’m not aware of any contact honestly between Arsenal and Frenkie De Jong at this point., remember that the salary of De Jong at Barcelona is a huge salary, it’s a big, big salary after the agreement they did years ago for Frenkie De Jong,’ Romano said.

“The main problem has been that De Jong has never been desperate to leave Barcelona, it really depends on the player, if he goes there and says ‘let me go’ the situation could change, but at the moment the situation is the same. I think Frenkie is trying to figure out what’s happening at Barcelona, but it’s not already decided for Frenkie to leave.”

Frenkie De Jong won’t leave

As exciting as it would be to see a player like De Jong coming to the Premier League, it sounds as though this one isn’t on the cards.

De Jong is settled at Barcelona, playing a key role for the Spanish giants, and that’s not likely to change under Hansi Flick either.

The reality is that Barcelona, despite their financial issues, have never been in the business of selling their key players, and De Jong certainly fits into that category of being one of La Blaugrana’s most crucial figures.
