Great Yarmouth and Banham races attract a large number of West Norfolk distance runners

West Norfolk Athletic Club members covered different areas of North Norfolk this week in search of some competitive distance running.

First up on Wednesday evening was the final race in the ever-popular Great Yarmouth promenade series - a midweek three-race series that sees runners racing on a five-mile looped course on Yarmouth seafront.

Regularly in these events, runners trade off a fast and flat course with an inevitable coastal breeze, this week was no exception.

WNAC had two runners competing and the first home for the club was Callum Stanforth.

Stanforth continued his good form on the back of the Manchester marathon to finish second overall with a time of 26:49.

Having led the race for a large amount of time, Stanforth wasn’t able to hold off strong competition which is always present in Yarmouth.

Stanforth still claimed first in the age category (senior men) and a new club record for the five-mile distance.

Ben Foxwell was next back for WNAC, finishing in a time of 35:28 and 117th overall.

Foxwell overcame a fast first mile due to a tailwind and a stitch to finish strongly again on his road back to fitness.

On Saturday morning, West Norfolk members took on a more unique challenge.

The Run Banham Zoo 5k allowed runners to race 5k in and around the grounds of the popular Norfolk attraction.

Starting in the zoo, runners raced in the actual grounds before moving onto a more multi-terrain surface for most of the race.

Grassy running surface combined with torrential rain resulted in tricky racing conditions but it didn’t stop WNAC members

from putting in some strong performances.

The exciting WNAC prospect Henry Gosnell continued his impressive comeback from injury, completing his first 5k since last July.

Gosnell powered through the rain to finish with a time of 19:47 for seventh overall and second u17, another strong performance from one of the clubs’ young athletes.

Not far behind was Adam Howard, fresh from a strong performance at the Grand East Anglian Run.

Howard finished in 19:48 for eight overall to win the M40 category.

Aidan Howard came in not long after his dad (Adam) in 21:35 and was placed 21st overall and fifth U17 whilst also claiming a new PB.

Rob Gosnell secured the M40 third-place crown with a time of 22:39 to finish 33rd overall.

Ryan Towsey finished strongly to come home with a time of 23:37 and was placed 15th senior man and 47th overall.

Another impressive performance came from WNAC youngster Thomas Elsdon, who was 12th in the U17 race and 70th overall in a

time of 25:02.

Closer to home on Saturday, another WNAC young athlete Hanley Angell earned a PB at the King's Lynn parkrun on his search

for a sub-20-minute effort, which is certainly a matter of when and not if for the 17-year-old.

On Sunday John Greenhalgh was the club's only representative at the Holt 10k hosted by North Norfolk beach runners.

A tough multi-terrain and undulating 10k in the North Norfolk town of Holt, a challenge for any runner.
