Coffee morning in Chatteris for people with dementia and their carers

A one-off coffee morning is being held to help shape a new hub that will help people living with dementia to access support to ‘live as well as possible’.

The event is open to anyone interested and is being held at the Bricstan Room in Chatteris on Tuesday, June 18 from 10am to noon.

The event aims to tell people about a research project being run by the University of Hertfordshire in Fenland.

Dr Melanie Handley and Professor Claire Goodman both from the University of Hertfordshire, and Professor Reinhold Scherer from the University of Essex are leading a team of researchers, representatives from health and care organisations, experts by experience, charities, and other organisations to develop an Innovation Hub.

The Bricstan Room behind Chatteris parish church is the venue for the free coffee monring.

They will be looking at how and why some people with dementia ‘move’ through the systems of local support and they are hoping local people with dementia and their carers will get involved in helping with the research.

There will also be some support available along with a quick update from the Alzheimer’s Society. James Carney from the Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service will be on hand to talk about how people can get free safety checks, and free smoke alarms.

Colleagues from the Care Network and the Dementia Carers Support Service will also be present.

A spokesperson for the research team said: “We would also really love to connect with anyone in Chatteris who organises support and or local groups that support people with dementia and their carers – even if they are not specifically for people with dementia.

“If you’d like us to give out some leaflets/information about your group or organisation then please do get in touch to arrange it, as it’s a good opportunity for us to signpost people to other support in the town.

“Likewise, I’m more than happy to have a call or Teams with anyone who might want to tell me a bit more about your role/organisation.

“Please do forward this onwards to helpful colleagues or anyone who you think we should connect with.”
