It came about in unlikely circumstances, but Garang Kuol has now made his Newcastle United debut.
While he is yet to play in a competitive game for Newcastle United, Garang Kuol has now had the chance to feel what it is like to represent the Magpies. And it happened in his own country, as the Australia international made his Toon debut down under.
Newcastle United’s post-season trip to Australia was highly controversial, but it did give fans in Oz the chance to see Eddie Howe’s team. And it also gave them the chance to toast one of their own, as Kuol was involved in the Newcastle squad for the first time.
His first experiences of playing for Newcastle United were mixed. He barely got a touch of the ball after coming on against Tottenham Hotspur, but was able to score his penalty as Howe’s side beat Spurs in a shootout.
Kuol then started Newcastle’s second game, as a very inexperienced Toon side lost 8-0 to the A-League All Stars. The teenager made a name for himself representing the A-League All Stars in 2022, yet they embarrassed him last week.

Garang Kuol sends message to fans after Newcastle United debut
It was great to see Kuol feature for the Magpies, but he did nothing to suggest he is ready for Premier League action. However, he did not show he is a lost cause either, with difficult circumstances not giving Kuol a proper chance to showcase his talents.
Another loan move away from Newcastle feels likely, although it has been suggested that he could even be sold. However, that would come as a shock this summer.
But as the dust settles on his Toon debut, the 19-year-old has taken to his official Instagram account to reflect on the trip to Melbourne.
“Never would’ve dreamt of debuting on home soil in front of my family and friends for this amazing club,” he wrote.
“Thank you @nufc and the great group of lads for the surreal experience. Appreciate all the love from everyone, we keep learning & growing everyday. Thank God.”
Newcastle have a big decision to make with Kuol
After all the hype and two massively disappointing loan spells, it sounds like Kuol is just happy to wear a black and white shirt and play for Newcastle United.
Hopefully it is something he experiences again, at a time when he is not just being used for commercial reasons.
That is why this is an important summer for the young Aussie. If Newcastle had gone to America for their post-season friendlies, there is no way Kuol would have been involved. But the trip to Australia gave him an opportunity, and it will hopefully drive him towards earning more opportunities.
A third loan spell away from St James’ Park seems most likely, but it is absolutely vital that the Magpies send him to the right club. Moves to Hearts and Volendam were disasters, and Kuol cannot afford a third disaster.
Another option could be to keep him on Tyneside, giving Kuol the chance to work closer with Howe and improve as a player.
Wherever he ends up, Kuol wants to keep learning and growing. Hopefully he can learn so much that he eventually goes on to reach his potential and become a Newcastle United regular.
