Bayern Munich have announced the appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new head coach on a deal running until 2027.
The Bundesliga giants had been on the lookout for a new manager after agreeing to part ways with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2023/24 season all the way back in February. However, they failed to reach an agreement with any of their early targets.
Former managers Julian Nagelsmann and Hansi Flick were both linked with returns to the Allianz Arena but Bayern failed to reach an agreement with either, while Ralf Rangnick declined the chance to join the club in favour of staying with the Austria national team.
There was talk that Bayern could keep Tuchel in the role beyond the end of the season but club chiefs dismissed this idea.
Having been linked with the likes of Manchester United's Erik ten Hag, Brentford's Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi, who recently left Brighton & Hove Albion, Bayern settled on Burnley boss Kompany.
Speaking to Bayern channels, Kompany said: "I'm looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern. It's a great honour to be able to work for this club - FC Bayern is an institution in international football. As a coach, you have to stand for who you are as a person: I love having the ball, being creative - and we also have to be aggressive on the pitch and courageous. I'm now looking forward to the most basic things: working with the players, building a team. When the foundation is in place, success will follow."
The Belgian led the Clarets to the Championship title in 2022/23 playing an attractive brand of possession football. but his young side failed to adapt to the Premier League and were swiftly relegated back to the second tier with a measly tally of 24 points from 38 games.
Prior to managing Burnley, Kompany spent two years in charge of Anderlecht, plus four games as a player-coach. Across 192 games in management, Kompany has overseen 83 wins, 58 draws and 51 losses, boasting a win percentage of 43.23%.
Kompany has quite the job on his hands at Bayern, who finished the 2023/24 season third in the Bundesliga behind Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart.
