Collingham and District CC extend lead in Nottinghamshire Premier League Division Two with wins over Mansfield Hosiery Mills and Gedling Colliery

A superb century from Jack Copley helped Collingham begin their bank holiday weekend double-header by thrashing Mansfield Hosiery Mills by 154 runs on Saturday.

The Notts Premier League Division Two leaders lost the toss and were put into bat, but Mansfield skipper Mark Smallwood may have rued his decision as openers Copley and Joe Saxelby put on 85, the latter contributing 24 of those before he fell.

There was little respite as Copley continued to accumulate, and having taken 60 balls to reach his fifty, he needed 63 more to bring up his century before eventually went for 107.

His dismissal ended a 99-run stand with Umer Waheed who was bowled soon after for 37.

Skipper Burhan Alam (63 not out) then went into overdrive to take the game out of reach.

He smashed three sixes to bring up his half-century in just 25 balls, while Charlie Dixon struck three maximums in pummelling an unbeaten 31 off just a dozen balls.

Charana Nanayakkara (27) provided some late resistance until he was cleaned up by Max Shenton, and Alam (2-7) then came on to mop up the Mansfield tail, bowling the hosts out for 128 inside 40 overs.

COLLINGHAM AND DISTRICT v GEDLING COLLIERY

Collingham won by 96 runs

Collingham made it back-to-back bank holiday wins when they skittled Gedling Colliery for 68 on Monday to maintain their perfect start to the season.

A seventh victory from seven starts extended their lead at the top of Division Two to a daunting 20 points.

With skipper Burhan Alam unavailable for the home fixture, Max Shenton led the side, but he lost the toss as Collingham were again sent in to face testing batting conditions.

Jack Copley and Umer Waheed both made 10 in 26-run partnerships with opener Joe Saxelby who top-scored with 27.

When Saxelby’s gritty 59-ball knock was ended, Collingham were in a spot of bother at 55-3, but Ben Jones steadied the ship with a patient 26 before he was bowled by Danny O’Brien (4-38) to leave the hosts on 106-5.

Charlie Dixon collected a couple of sixes - the only maximums of the innings - to make a quick 24 at almost a run-a-ball as the top eight all made it into double-figures, heping the hosts to 164-9 from their 50 overs.

Liam Tew struck in the first over of the reply before Tauseef Ahmed (13) and Sami Ullah (14) added a stubborn 23-run second-wicket stand.

It proved to be Gedling’s biggest partnership, and once they fell in quick succession, the visitors provided little resistance, with no other batter reaching double-figures.

The Collingham attack shared the wickets around, with two apiece for John Miller, Adam Mendham and skipper Shenton, as the away side were castled for just 68 in 33 overs.

Next up for the Division Two pacesetters is a home match with third-placed Clifton Village on Saturday at Dale Field (11.30am) which will be followed by a trip to second-placed Caythorpe on Saturday, June 8.
