Re-enactors get in the swing to recreate 1940s at Denny Abbey

It was like taking a step back in time over the bank holiday weekend as the Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey in Waterbeach held a 1940s-themed event on Sunday and Monday (26-27 May), which included Second World War re-enactors and swing bands.

Sarah Michael, museum manager, said that more than 500 people came over the two days.

“We had re-enactors representing the RAF, the Local Defence Volunteers (the Home Guard) and GIs during World War Two,” she explained, “and our museum volunteers got out lots of our 1940s artefacts from our stores and we had those on display.”

Two swing bands also performed. On the Sunday, That Other Band played and sang popular tunes of the day and then, on the Monday, the Blue Skies Big Band took to the stage.

Sarah wanted to thank everyone who came along, and “a special thanks to all of our volunteers, who got together to make it happen – we couldn’t have done it without them”.

She added that the Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey is open this week, Thursday to Sunday, noting that “we’ll have children’s craft activities on Thursday and Friday”.
