Liverpool should sign ‘elite’ centre-back and partner him with Virgil van Dijk in defence next season - opinion

Liverpool should be getting to work as soon as possible for new players, even with the most recent season only just coming to an end.

New boss Arne Slot will be identifying which areas of his squad need improving and which are suitable, at least for the time being.

But one area that he must consider strengthening is at the back, with the Reds having endured a difficult defensive season last time out.

Goalkeeper Alisson and his full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson cannot be handed much of the blame given that they missed key parts of the season due to injury.

Captain fantastic Virgil van Dijk meanwhile is a crucial piece of the puzzle, and must be kept at all costs, even if he wasn’t at his very best in more recent times.

Liverpool keeping tabs on three centre-backs

With Ibrahima Konate not quite living up to expectation at Anfield, coupled with Jarell Quansah’s lack of experience and Joel Matip’s recent exit, a new face is needed alongside Van Dijk.

And the Anfield side have seemingly been working hard on identifying such a player, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho having been watched in person.

Links have also been drawn to Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah and Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, but 90min claims that the former won’t be pursued and a move for the latter is potentially not feasible this summer.

Reds should move for Chelsea star Levi Colwill

Despite being unlikely, a transfer for Stamford Bridge ace Colwill should still be pursued, with the defender certain to improve Liverpool’s backline.

He may only be 21 years old, but the former Brighton loanee boasts plenty of big-game experience, with Ben Jacobs branding him “elite.”

The defender is also an England international, and crucially his left-footed nature would allow Van Dijk to push onto the right side of central defence and potentially take his game to another level.

There is even the added bonus of versatility, with Colwill having proven time and again that he is equally adept at left-back as he is at centre-back.
