Wayne Rooney asked which team he wished he played for in his career, Gary Neville says their fans ‘missed out’ big time

Wayne Rooney surprised former Manchester United and England teammate Gary Neville after naming the one team he wished he played for in his legendary playing career.

The 38-year-old Manchester United and England legend burst onto the scene at Everton and caught the eye of iconic former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought Wayne Rooney to Old Trafford in 2004 after United signed him in a deal worth £27m from Premier League side Everton.

Rooney had an incredible spell at United and eclipsed fellow club legend Sir Bobby Charlton as the Red Devils’ all-time leading scorer.

The former United and England striker lifted five Premier League titles, a Champions League, a Europa League, an FA Cup and three League Cups with the club.

Rooney continued his playing career at Old Trafford long after Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 and was later promoted to the United captaincy.

The former United captain left the Premier League side in 2017 and returned to boyhood club Everton for a brief second spell.

Rooney later saw out the remainder of his playing career at DC United and Derby County before he announced his retirement from football.

Rooney wanted to play for one team

Wayne Rooney kick-started his coaching career during his time at Derby County before he took his first steps into management with the club.

The former Everton and Manchester United star later managed DC United before returning to England for an ill-fated spell with Birmingham City.

Rooney was sacked from his role at Birmingham City back in January, but the United legend was recently appointed the Plymouth Argyle manager.

The former England captain appeared on The Overlap and took part in a quick-fire Q&A with United legend Gary Neville.

Rooney was asked about one team that he wished he played for in his legendary career and the Plymouth Argyle boss surprisingly picked Celtic.

Neville was stunned by Rooney’s admission before telling Celtic fans they “missed out” on having the ex-United striker play for them.

“Celtic? Wow. Celtic fans, you missed out there,” he said.

Rooney previously flirted with his admiration for the Scottish club after he posted a photo of his son Cass wearing a Celtic strip to football training.

Rooney on his encounter with Donald Trump

During his chat with Neville, Rooney revealed his experience of going golfing with former US President Donald Trump and the level of security around them.

The former Birmingham City and Derby County boss also said that former New York mayor Rudi Guiliani was present for his golfing session with Donald Trump.

“The maddest thing about it was we had [Rudi] Guiliani in the buggy behind us, then there were about 50-100 golf buggies that were all security,” he explained.

“There was a boat in the lake with snipers, there were snipers in the bushes, and I was like, ‘What’s going on here?!’”
