Denny Hamlin had high hopes for Kyle Larson, who was looking to pull off the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 double. On his Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin shared his thoughts on Larson earning a P18 finish in the Indy 500.

“It was still a great run, not a great finish, but a great run that he had apparently,” Hamlin said. “Overall, he should have considered the 500 a success. He was competitive. I would like to see him do it again, not because he missed the [Coca-Cola] 600 but you want to see him actually be able to do the double.”

Hamlin went on to talk about where Larson would have finished if he competed in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “Had he gotten the opportunity to get in the Cup car with 150 laps to go, it would have been very interesting to see how far he could have made it to the front,” Hamlin said. “The car was fast. There’s no doubt about it. I think [Justin] Allgaier deserves to get a lot of credit for the job he did. It’s such a hard job to do to get in there and know that your job is do not wreck this car because when [Larson] gets here he’s got to get in it.”

The Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 were impacted by weather delays. After Larson completed the Indy 500, he traveled to Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600. The race was suspended due to rain and lighting in the area. It was called and Larson did not drive one lap in the Coca-Cola 600.

Denny Hamlin shares thoughts on the end of Stewart-Haas Racing

Along with Larson’s attempt to complete the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 double, the end of Stewart-Haas Racing is one of the biggest stories in NASCAR this week. Hamlin shared his thoughts on the team shutting down at the end of the year.

“We should take this time to thank [Stewart-Haas Racing] for everything they have done for our sport over the last couple of decades,” Hamlin said on social media. “They turned contenders into winners and winners into champions. While this is the last chapter for them in the sport, it will begin a new chapter for others. Let’s celebrate all of their accomplishments and wish them well in the future.”

It’s been reported that 23XI Racing is expected to buy at least one of the four charters from Stewart-Haas. Hamlin is co-owner of 23XI Racing with Michael Jordan.
