‘All day’: Matty Cash makes it clear who he wants Aston Villa to face in the Champions League next season

Aston Villa will be playing Champions League football next season and the club have done remarkably well to get to this stage.

This has been a project in the making, going back from when the club was stuck and struggling in the Championship.

But starting from the legendary Dean Smith, Aston Villa have built themselves to the top where they will now play against Europe’s elite teams in the Champions League.

Take away the unforgettable Steven Gerrard era, the rest has been pretty positive and progressive, with the co-owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens deserving huge credit for their work.

But the brains behind it all has been Unai Emery and nearly every Aston Villa player has benefited from him during his 18 or so months at the club.

Matty Cash was one of them and he is certainly looking forward to playing Champions League football for the first time in his career.

The right-back was asked which team he would like to face if he had a choice and he didn’t hesitate to answer ‘Real Madrid’, as he told Sky Sports.

They are the kings of Europe. In another Champions League final. They face Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on Saturday.

Real Madrid in the Champions League

“Oh, Real Madrid, all day,” admitted Cash. “I would love to play at the Bernabeu, it would be amazing.

On Cash v Vinicius would be good to watch: “Yeah, he would be good. All the top clubs, you want to play against. We play against them in the Premier League. Then the likes of Barca and Madrid. Stuff like that. It would be amazing.”

Aston Villa’s transfer business

The 2024 summer transfer window will officially open in July and it’s Villa’s chance to really stamp their authority in the market.

Fans are hoping FFP and PSR don’t cause too much havoc because it might stop Villa from really going in and getting who they want.

Names have already been mentioned, including Luton Town’s Ross Barkley. He already had a stint at the club, so how he fairs at Villa Park in his second spell will be interesting.

You feel the defence needs refreshing and bulking up, especially with Clement Lenglet going back to Barcelona after his season-long loan and talk of Diego Carlos also leaving.
