'Quite a few were hoping': What some at Tottenham said about Timo Werner before loan was extended - journalist

Journalist Alasdair Gold has shared what quite a few people around Tottenham Hotspur told him about the future of Timo Werner ahead of the forward extending his loan deal in North London.

Just like the January transfer window, Timo Werner became Tottenham’s first signing of the summer this week, with the German seeing his loan extended for another year.

Spurs maintain the option to sign the 28-year-old on a permanent deal, but this appears to be a smart move from the club after Werner showed some promise over the last few months.

He scored two goals and provided three assists in 13 Premier League games. But Danny Murphy admitted that he was shocked that Tottenham had agreed to sign Werner on a second loan deal.

However, speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold suggested that many at Tottenham will be very pleased that the club have ensured that Werner will remain in the ranks next season.

“It’s one of those where this deal doesn’t really come out of the transfer budget, there’s no transfer fee for him, and there will be more attacking signings on top of this,” he said.

“They certainly want a striker, they’ll look for a winger as well. And I think that’s key, and I think it’s also key that Postecoglou wanted him. I’ve spoken to a few people around the club and around the squad as well, and quite a few people were hoping that he would stay.”

No-brainer for Spurs to extend loan

In fairness to Werner, the terms of the January deal showed that no-one was expecting the winger to stake a Ballon d’Or claim while on loan. Ultimately, RB Leipzig were willing to let him leave on loan with no guarantee that they would receive a permanent fee.

He did show some promising signs, with Roy Keane once suggesting that he would not enjoy coming up against Werner, labelling him a nuisance.

But it was always unlikely that he was going to steal the show during his time on loan. And in truth, it is hard to see him starting regularly under Ange Postecoglou next season.

It is another low-risk move for a player who can, on his day, make a real difference.
