Rangers target plays last game for club as journalist reports deal 'close to being finalised'

Nils Koppen appears to be getting his head down for this summer’s transfer business as Rangers look to complete a full blown rebuild.

No sooner had a deal for Jose Cordoba been pulled than Philippe Clement was said to be on the next player on the list in Thomas Galdames.

The Chilean defender is currently playing in Argentina but it looks as though time is up as Rangers circle, with a decision on his future said to be imminent.

Thomas Galdames set to play last game as Rangers circle

Chilean football outlet Despliegue Fútbol has reported on Rangers interest in adding the 25-year old to their squad and the pace appears to be picking up on the left-sided enforcer’s career:

“Thomas Galdames will play his last game tomorrow with Godoy Cruz’s shirt against El Porvenir. He has offers from Scottish Rangers and a Belgian club.”

Journalist Esteban Suraci has said that the deal is “close to being finalised”.

Capable of playing either in the middle of defence or at left-back, it is eay to see why Thomas Galdames has been targeted by the Rangers recruitment team.

Writing on X, South American football journalist Nathan Joyes has backed what could be an interesting move:

“Godoy Cruz’s Thomas Galdames (25) linked with a move to Rangers FC.

“The Chilean left-back is comfortable with both feet, confident in the final third and can produce a good delivery, both in-play and from set pieces.

“Also played his part in a defence which hasn’t conceded many in 2024.”

Rangers still a big draw despite missing out on Jose Cordoba

At 6ft tall, Galdames isn’t the biggest, however, he has already been in and around the senior Chile squad and named in Argentina’s team of the year.

As seen with Cordoba though, who looks like he is on his way to Norwich City, the SPFL isn’t for everyone.

Finances and the league that Rangers play in will always make Nils Koppen’s job hard, but the club still has plenty to offer those looking to make the leap to Europe.

A solid continental reputation as well as the chance to win trophies in front of 50,000 fans every other week sells itself.

Ibrox and Auchenhowie are better facilities than most other clubs can offer too.

Rangers need a lot of work doing to the squad and the names being mentioned are a positive start.

As we’ve seen with Cordoba though, until they are standing with the red, white and blue scarf above their head, the chickens should be left alone.
