Saudi club could reunite two former Arsenal stars who struck up excellent partnership

There are several former Arsenal stars currently thriving across the continent, but two attackers may now bid farewell to European football.

Arsene Wenger thought he had given Arsenal a parting gift when he spent over £100m combined on two strikers in Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in his final season at the club.

Lacazette joined from Lyon in the summer of 2017, but a slow start in a chaotic team meant that with the departure of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud in the following January, he was joined by Borussia Dortmund star Aubameyang.

Wenger experimented with the forwards. Aubameyang came in on the left wing, with Lacazette as a central striker when both were fit and available.

Unai Emery then changed this, as he implemented a three at the back formation to accommodate them both upfront, and for a while, both thrived.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette thrived as a partnership for Arsenal

Aubameyang was deadly under Emery, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2018-19 with 22 strikes, whilst Lacazette won the Player of the Season award in the same season.

Both were at their best when paired upfront, and a 4-2 win at Valencia in the Europa League semi-finals was perhaps the highlight, with Aubameyang netting a hattrick and Lacazette scoring and assisting.

However, things went downhill for Lacazette after, as he lost a yard of pace after an injury in the following season, and his goal tally continually dropped.

Aubameyang would continue to thrive until he signed a new contract under Mikel Arteta, and he would be brutally axed from the team, stripped of the captaincy and eventually released.

Both strikers are currently on opposite ends of a fierce rivalry in France, with Lacazette back at his hometown club Lyon, whilst Aubameyang is thriving with Olympique Marseille.

However, the pair could be reunited once again in Saudi Arabia. L’Equipe have reported that both names are under consideration from Al-Shabaab, who are keen on strengthening their attacking lines.

Both players, and Aubameyang in particular did have great moments at Arsenal, with both helping Arteta win the FA Cup, but they were far from popular figures when they made their departures from the club in 2022.

Some Arsenal fans may be intrigued at seeing two former captains reunite, given their electric partnership and strong friendship, but their time at Arsenal may not be looked back on as a success despite some outstanding moments as a striker pairing.
