The two-minute warning and helmet communication is coming to college football in 2024. Injury reports could also be coming soon.
On Monday afternoon, Commissioner Greg Sankey spoke with the media at SEC Spring Meetings in Destin. During a long press conference, one of the most important individuals in college athletics said that his conference would discuss the possibility of instituting “availability reports” during the week full of meetings in hotel conference rooms.
“We don’t want to just rush into something,” Sankey said. “It’s not injury reporting. It’s a very different circumstance given some of the privacy issues we have. Yet when you start to see the numbers of dollars being bet on legalized sports gambling around college sports — not just football, but men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, baseball — all of those catch your attention.
Multiple coaches have been asked about the potential change this week. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian believes that the SEC could use rules similar to the NFL in fining coaches if the rules are not followed. Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops has no issues with injury reports, according to Action Network‘s Brett McMurphy.
“I’m pretty forthcoming. If someone’s out, I’ll say they’re out. I’m on board,” Stoops said. “We have so many other issues now. That’s a mouse turd there.”
Give the 12th-year Kentucky head coach an award for one of the best quotes of the week. Mark Stoops has probably not been the most transparent head coach in the sport when it comes to reporting what players will play or not play when he meets with the media on Thursday every game week, but a new injury reporting system could make declaring the injury info much easier for all parties involved.
For the other issues at stake, Sankey has said that he didn’t expect much chatter regarding future schedules after that was the No. 1 topic at spring meetings last year. The House v. NCAA settlement and everything that comes with it has taken up most of the oxygen this week with revenue-sharing questions and what roster caps in football could look like with unlimited scholarships.
