Christopher Bell just woke up from a nap when he learned that he won the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night. The NASCAR driver recently appeared on the Dale Jr. Download podcast with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and talked about what he was doing when he learned he won the race that was in a weather delay.

“Whenever they did not cancel the race, whenever it quit drying, I went back to the motorhome and I was trying to get a nap in,” Bell said. “I knew I was going to be a late one whenever we got going. I was laying on the couch and trying to close my eyes. It’s almost impossible to take a nap during a rain delay whenever you’re leading the race.

“I can tell you that because you’re so focused on what’s going to happen whenever you go back racing how you’re going to execute the rest of the race. I got woke up to the fact that we won and that was very unique for sure.”

Earnhardt then asked Bell if they got him out of the couch to tell him that he won.

“I was laying on the couch and I got the broadcast in the background,” Bell explained. “They’re playing these radioactive things so it’s just like background noise. I wasn’t asleep or fully asleep anyway. Then all of a sudden, the background noise stops whenever the booth comes on, and I kind of like open my eyes a little bit, I’m watching the TV and someone on the booth starts talking and saying well they’re attempting to dry the track and it isn’t going well. At that same time, my phone buzzed and it was the NASCAR notification that we get, and they said that it was official.”

The race was called since the drivers had already completed 249 laps of the 400 laps. Bell earned his eighth Cup Series race win of his career and second of the season.

“It feels so good. Really the last two Coca-Cola 600s I’ve felt like we’ve had the potential to go to Victory Lane, and both times we haven’t been able to do it,” Bell told reporters after the race.

“To come back in 2024, and we’ve really been in a slump the last couple weeks, so to come out here and have a banner day at such a high-profile prestigious event is really big for us. Obviously, it was a great points day to get stage points at every stage and then the playoff points that come along with that.”
