'I'm feeling great': Wrexham ace Jacob Mendy drops injury update and shares when he could return to action

Wrexham left-back Jacob Mendy has dropped an encouraging update on his injury and has explained when he could return to action.

Wrexham secured promotion back to League One in style, clinching victory in each of their last five matches.

Phil Parkinson’s men finished their season with aplomb, as did Paul Mullin, who closed out the campaign with an impressive 14 goals in his last 12 matches.

The only negative to emerge from their incredible end-of-season form was the injury to left-back Jacob Mendy.

He was substituted in the comeback win over Colchester United and missed the final four games with a hamstring injury, which ended his campaign prematurely.

Mendy played a vital role in Parkinson’s starting XI, sharing responsibilities with James McClean on the left and supplying five assists in 31 league appearances.

Whilst an injury put a downer on what was a productive campaign on a personal level, it also prevented him from celebrating with his teammates in Las Vegas.

Fortunately, the Gambian international is now on the mend following his operation and expects to be back around August or September time.

Updating supporters on his current progress, Mendy told The Athletic: “The operation went really well. Better than expected and I’m recovering fast, so I’m happy. The crutches went two weeks ago and I’m now doing a bit of walking… exercise in the gym, too, so I’m feeling great.

“This injury at Colchester was the worst one I’ve ever had.”

Although it was devastating to lose Mendy for the final stretch of the campaign, the 27-year-old now has a full pre-season to recover and stake his claim for a starting spot in League One, a level he’s never played at before.

Will Jacob Mendy start for Wrexham in League One?

Regardless of whether Mendy recovers in time for the season starting in August, left-back is a position that Parkinson must address this summer.

The 56-year-old only has two options in that position, and McClean prefers to play in a central midfield role, leaving just Mendy to play on the left flank.

Ideally, Parkinson will sign an upgrade on the powerhouse this summer, as while he’s served Wrexham well, it is questionable whether he’s good enough to play in a side expecting to chase promotion to the Championship.

Goalkeeper is Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds initial priority, but after a new shot-stopper is signed, the Hollywood owners must turn their attention to addressing the left-back and striker problem.

A League One proven defender to rival Mendy or displace him in the starting lineup is certainly high up on the list of priorities as Wrexham prepare for life in the third tier.
