Age UK Thatcham calls for volunteers to support vulnerable elderly during Big Help Out

The Big Help Out is back.

This June, some of the country’s best-known charities are coming together to encourage people to volunteer and make a difference in their local communities.

Can you help?

And as one of the charities joining the initiative — which runs from June 7 until June 9 — Age UK’s Thatcham shop will be offering taster sessions on Wednesday, June 5, to those interested in helping out.

Shop manager at Age UK Thatcham, Donette Michelle Buckeridge, said: “Volunteers are the backbone of our shop.

“Every hour they contribute makes a huge difference and helps Age UK raise much-needed funds for its work supporting older people.

“We are always looking for new people to help out and join our friendly team.

“We have a range of roles available and can offer flexible opportunities in order to fit around busy lives.

“Volunteering in an Age UK shop is open to everyone over the age of 18, with no previous experience required.

“So, if you’re looking to find out more, sign up and book one of the taster sessions. We look forward to meeting you.”

Age UK’s shops generate much-needed funds for the charity’s work with older people, who depend on the support and dedication of volunteers.

Money raised goes towards promoting the charity’s vital services including the Telephone Friendship Service, free and confidential Advice Line and The Silver Line Helpline.

Anyone interested in volunteering but unable to attend on Wednesday, June 5, can schedule a taster session at a more convenient time by visiting www.ageuk.org.uk/shops to contact their nearest shop.

Taster sessions are open to everyone over the age of 18 and will give prospective volunteers an idea of what to expect, trying out different tasks including window dressing, creating displays, managing stock donations and serving customers.

Six million people supported last year’s Big Help Out, which started to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles.
