Kroos or Reus set for farewell with Champions League trophy

Germany's Toni Kroos and Marco Reus bid farewell to Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund on Europe's biggest stage as part of Saturday's Champions League final at Wembley.

Kroos, 34, is all but assured of starting for the record winners Real and will be aiming for a sixth title overall and fifth with the Spanish giants since his arrival inn 2014.

He will then end his career after playing for Germany at Euro 2024.

Former German international Reus, who turns 35 on Friday, is not retiring but, if fielded, will play his last Dortmund match after a dozen years which included losing the 2013 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, also at Wembley.

Kroos not thinking about himself but the team

Kroos and Reus got emotional farewells in their last home games at the Bernabeu and Signal Iduna Park, and Kroos has now said all that counts is a record extending 15th European Cup title with Real.

"To be honest, I am not thinking a lot about myself. It is the most important game for the whole team and we want to be successful," he said.

"Of course it is my last match for Real Madrid but then the Euros are still to come with Germany."

Kroos has amassed 22 titles with Real, plus 10 before that as Bayern, and he is also a 2014 World Cup winner and considered a candidate for this year's Ballon d'Or award.

"I hope he wins the Champions League once more. But the career of Toni Kroos doesn't need another Champions League victory to go down inn history. He has already made history," Real coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Unfulfilled Reus

Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl, by contrast, quipped that "Toni has won enough titles" and added that "I would wish it for Marco."

Considered one of the most gifted players of his generation, Reus' only silverware are two German Cup wins 2017 and 2021.

Injuries like just ahead of the 2014 World Cup and a number of near misses such as the lost 2013 Champions League final and lost 2023 Bundesliga title leave the forward and long-time Dortmunnd captain somewhat unfulfilled.

Reus is not expected to start but coach Edin Terzic has said that "I need Marco on Saturday. I need his quality."

Kehl meanwhile hopes for a dream farewell for Reus.

"I wish him an emotional final day, that we also win this title for him. It would be a cool story if he scores the winning goal in the end," Kehl said.
